Arooj Aftab, the Grammy-winning singer and composer known for her spellbinding blend of jazz, minimalism and South Asian classical traditions, embarks on a rare and unmissable tour with the London Contemporary Orchestra led by co-artistic director and principal conductor, Robert Ames. Reimagining music from across her acclaimed catalogue, this collaboration brings sweeping new orchestral textures to her intimate, emotionally rich sound world. LCO’s bold, cinematic approach perfectly complements Aftab’s haunting voice and boundary-defying compositions, promising an evening of deep atmosphere and transcendent beauty. Produced by Music Beyond Mainstream (MBM), this special series of performances offers audiences a unique chance to experience one of today’s most distinctive artists on a truly expansive scale. Robert Ames is a conductor, composer, curator and co-founder of the London Contemporary Orchestra. Over the last 15 years, Ames has pioneered a genre-fluid approach to collaboration, blurring the lines between electronic production and the classical tradition, opening new horizons for instrumental music in the process. With two solo albums to his name and extensive soundtrack experience from indie films to mainstream Oscar-winners, Ames’ work is as comfortable at the BBC Proms as it is at the Sydney Opera House. Helping shape a now-established ambient and neo-classical landscape unshackled from the constraints previously applied to orchestral music, Ames’ experience marks him as one of the most exciting and influential artists working in the world today. London Contemporary Orchestra makes the orchestra contemporary. LCO build new music in the room—live, with collaborators—and design nights that first-time listeners and long-time fans want to be at. Immediate sound. Open doors. Made for now. Since 2008 they’ve worked across scenes and disciplines—Steve Reich, Pauline Oliveros, Philip Glass, Terry Riley, Mica Levi, Jonny Greenwood, Actress, William Basinski, Anoushka Shankar, Bryce Dessner, Sigur Rós, Frank Ocean, Taylor Swift; artists Holly Blakey, Bill Morrison, Conrad Shawcross, Ron Arad, Hannah Perry; and platforms Secret Cinema, NTS, Boiler Room, DAZED, Resident Advisor—on stages including BBC Proms, Barbican, Southbank Centre, Roundhouse, Printworks, Tate Modern, Meltdown Festival. In fashion, they’re a permanent fixture, working with Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood, Nike, Burberry, and more. LCO exist for bold live performances, commissioning and premiering new work, creating real pathways for emerging players, arrangers, and composers, and widening access through participation and cross-disciplinary collaboration. They are committed to an orchestra that reflects the diversity of London—on stage, behind the scenes, and in the room.
