Where

I’m Folkestone born & bred and have been working in Folkestone bars for many years, including the Clifton Hotel, ten years at Harvey Wine Bar & then Wards Hotel. One afternoon in May 1998, I was walking past what is now The Chambers. At the time it was empty & had been for two years. It was pretty messy…. I booked a look round a few days later & the rest is history!
Having my own bar was definitely a bit of a dream, & music & food were always part of the plan. Food went ‘boom’ & then we looked at the music we could offer, first with very local bands & DJs. Musicians always say ‘if you like what I do, you must try this guy’ so our music offering was really organic. It just grew and grew. GOOD times.
We were busy from the word ‘Go’ which was great. Liz and I then set about totally ripping out the VERY poor kitchens & started our Mexican food offering in June 1999. If we thought we were busy before, we were stunned by the trade our food brought in! I think we’ve been a staple part of the town’s food offering ever since, which we love.

About

Opened in December 1998 by husband and wife team Chris and Liz Smith, The Chambers went from a standing start basement bar to become almost immediately a social, musical and artistic hub of the town, featuring grassroots and international live & DJ music from the start, gallery space & book launches.

In June 1999 our kitchen opened, launching our Mexican inspired menu; the first in the town.

2001 saw the inclusion under The Chambers name of the beautiful art-deco ground floor corner shop directly above the bar, which we snapped up and turned into our fully licensed Coffee Shop. It’s the BEST place for watching the world go by.

So… to 2023! Throughout 2023, we’ll be celebrating our 25 years in business on the same site with the same Folkestone born team.

Our mission is, and always has been, high standards in all that we do.
Our bar has been in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide every year bar one, since 2004 and won Pub Of The Year in 2008.
Our food is all in-house, locally sourced and always hand prepared.
Our Coffee is Fairtrade.
Our live and DJ artistes are welcomed and treated with respect.

We do what we love, in a community that we love, and hope that it shows
