Described in Jazzwise Magazine as evoking a “Metheny-esque lyricism”, guitarist Steve Banks’ latest project is a quintet comprising musicians from the forefront of UK jazz (Rebecca Nash – keys, Nick Dover – Sax, Jules Jackson – bass and Mark Whitlam – drums).
Based in Bristol, Steve’s captivating style, lyricism and versatility have kept him much in demand. He has recorded and performed with Sara Colman, Greg Cordez and We Are Leif amongst many others. Recent UK performances include Birmingham Symphony Hall, Kings Place, London, Pizza Express Jazz Club, London, Colston Hall, Bristol and Eastside Jazz Club, Birmingham.
Steve plays electric, acoustic, baritone and nylon string guitars on singer songwriter Sara Colman’s recent release ‘What We’re Made Of’. He co-composed several tracks with Sara and his composition ‘Open’ features on the album with string arrangements by Jonathan Silk. The album appeared on Jazzwise Magazine’s ‘Top 10 albums of 2018’ and ‘Best of Jazz on Bandcamp’ lists and was awarded 5 stars by UK Vibe.
Steve is also a committed and experienced educator. He developed the educational site Practisin2Play with internationally renowned guitarist, composer and educator Mike Walker and has taught improvisation, applied theory and professional musicianship to individuals, groups and ensembles at undergraduate level since 2007.
With the Quintet, his first project as leader, he debuts his own original compositions encompassing deep contemporary grooves, Brazilian and swing influences, lush harmonies and memorable melodic hooks. The rich and dynamic musical landscapes created by the quintet are redolent of The Impossible Gentlemen, Maria Schneider, Fred Hersch and Bill Frisell, providing a showcase for Steve’s expressive, resonant and distinctive voice.
