Guitarist Jon Taylor was educated at The Guildhall School Of Music (Jazz & Rock Course, 1985-86) where tutors included the late Lionel Grigson, Phil Lee and Trevor Tomkins. At college he received valuable experience playing with Art Blakey’s Jazzz Messengers and trumpeter Bobby Shew. Further studies ensued with Joe Louis Walker, Carl Orr and Jim Mullen.
He has backed many of the top names in British jazz past and present, including Harry Beckett, Don Weller, Dick Morrissey, Ed Jones and Art Themen.
He has a long-standing musical partnership with pianist Tim Richards, going back to the 1990s. The pair co-fronted various bands and backed a number of singers. Currently they can be seen and heard together in JT4tet and occasionally in duo format.
His favourite guitarists include: Lonnie Johnson, Django Reinhardt, Teddy Bunn, Freddie Green, Charlie Christian, Al Casey, Oscar Moore, Tiny Grimes, Bill Jennings, Mary Osborne, Kenny Burrell, Wes Montgomery, Grant Green, George Benson, Eric Gale, Phil Upchurch, Cornell Dupree, Larry Carlton, Robben Ford and John Scofield. He also listens to horn players, pianists and organists.
