Feb 6 – Rose Room @ The Globe
Description Voted ‘Best Band’ twice at the Scottish Jazz Awards, Rose Room are Scotland’s leading ensemble influenced by the Gypsy Jazz genre. Sharing a love of Swing music and the style of the great Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli, their “vigorous and vivacious” performances go “down a storm” with any audience as they serve up their 1930s ‘Hot Club’ standards, Gypsy Jazz favourites and self-penned originals with virtuosity, verve and panache recreating the excitement of Rive Gauche Paris. Now in their second decade, the quartet is based in Glasgow and is fronted by award-winning virtuoso violinist and “sophisticated songstress” Seonaid Aitken who was voted Scottish Jazz Awards ‘Best Vocalist’ in 2017 & 2018, presented BBC Radio Scotland’s ‘Jazz Nights’ for 6 years and is a regular tutor at the Grappelli-Django Camp in The Netherlands. Scotland’s No.1 guitar maker, Jimmy Moon of ‘Moon Guitars’, features on double bass with Celtic Connections’ Danny Kyle Award-winner Tam Gallagher on rhythm guitar. The newest addition to the band, and continuing Rose Room’s second decade in style, is an exceptional talent from Glasgow’s Southside – solo guitarist Conor Smith – known for his work with hugely popular band The Vintage Explosion. With three albums recorded to date – The High Life (2015), Am I Blue (2013) and Somewhere In Roseland (2011) – Rose Room have opened the Gypsy Jazz Festival of London, headlined all of the major Scottish jazz festivals, appeared at the celebrated Shetland Folk Festival and toured Ireland performing at the Guinness Cork Jazz Festival. They have collaborated with Stéphane Grappelli’s former guitarist; the world-famous virtuoso Martin Taylor MBE, leading British jazz violinist Christian Garrick, German Gypsy Jazz star Joscho Stephan, top Scottish saxophonist Konrad Wiszniewski and Children’s Classic Concerts with their show ‘Django’s Journey’. Their music has been supported on BBC Radio Scotland, BBC Radio Ulster and Jazz FM. Rose Room were delighted to have been voted ‘Best Band’ in the Scottish Jazz Awards 2018 and 2021 and two of Rose Room’s tracks are featured on The Clutha Sessions charity CD released by the Clutha Trust. “Classy vintage swing and gypsy jazz played by a band that combines brilliant musicianship and warm personality” – JAZZ SCOTLAND “As close to the sound of the great Stephane Grappelli as I think you’re going to hear in Scotland” – BBC RADIO SCOTLAND “Rose Room swing harder than an elm tree in a force nine English gale” – SHETLAND NEWS AT THE GLOBE Unreserved seating.
