CLARK TRACEY’S JAZZ CHAMPIONS @ Fleet Jazz Club
Clark Tracey is an award-winning drummer, bandleader, composer and arranger, who originally featured with the band of his late, great, Father Stan Tracey CBE. Clark has gone on to establish himself in his own right as one of the country’s leading modern jazz drummers and with this band featuring some of the most experienced musicians on the UK scene, he revisits some of his father’s most famous compositions along with some beloved jazz classics. The Jazz Champions have been experiencing sell out houses and stand out reviews.A gig not to be missed! “One of the most impressive jazz drummers in Britain today.” (The Times) Featuring SIMON ALLEN on sax. Simon began his career with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra and the Pendulum Jazz Orchestra, performing alongside jazz stars such as Gerard Presencer, Jamie Cullum, and Peter King. He played in the late great Stan Tracey’s various groups and is featured on his final two quartet recordings, as well as octet and big band album releases. MARK ARMSTRONG on trumpet. A leading arranger, composer & trumpeter, Mark is a formidable presence in UK Jazz. He features regularly with Ronnie Scott’s Big Band, and played regularly with Stan Tracey. He joined Stan Tracey’s Big Band live from 2006 & recorded on his final quintet album The Flying Pig in 2013. A dynamic sideman, Mark’s playing can be heard in various ensembles; Latin Jazz with Robin Jones’s Sextet; with swing revivalist Ray Gelato; popular trad jazz group the Pasadena Roof Orchestra, and in blistering bebop ensemble Peter Long’s Gillespiana. He is also Professor at the Royal College of Music and has been Artistic & Music Director of National Youth Jazz Orchestra for over a decade. GARETH WILLIAMS is one of the UK’s leading modern jazz pianists. A fiery and creative player, he won the British Jazz Awards in 2013 and has played with an impressive array of world-class artists, from Jazz/Hip Hop band “Us3” to jazz musicians such as Joe Lovano, Jerry Bergonzi, George Coleman and Jim Mullen. He was also MD for vocalist Claire Martin for many years. With Marianne Windham guesting on double bass. I was knocked out by the prospect of hearing such a terrific ensemble of seasoned exponents of post-bop music. For me Tracey is a world-class musician whose mature and distinctive artistry – his own “snap-crackle” – is right up there with the likes of Philly Joe Jones and Roy Haynes. Clark Tracey is also a great bandleader, able to engage both easily and warmly with audiences while offering them the most intelligently programmed music, selected from many a realm of jazz.- Jazz Journal, 2024.
