Brand Nu Dolla play the music of Abdullah Ibrahim @ The Jazz Centre UK
Abdullah Ibrahim Jazz has found fertile ground in many places as it has spread beyond the confines of the United States, but none more so than South Africa: amongst the most distinctive, original and renowned of that nation’s jazz figures is Abdullah Ibrahim. Pianist, composer and bandleader, he forged a world wide career over many decades, and was a particular favourite amongst London audiences. Born in 1934, Abdullah Ibrahim blended the sound of American jazz, particularly his major influences Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk, with traditional African song and gospel music. Ellington himself arranged recording sessions for him after his move to Europe in the early 60’s. His music possesses a poise, grace and depth that seems to speak for the whole culture and history that he represents; Nelson Mandela called him ‘our Mozart’.
