Benedict Stephens Quartet presents The Bill Henderson Project @ Black Mountain Jazz
Throughout his career, Bill Henderson’s vocal style opened up collaborations with many jazz greats, including Oscar Peterson, Count Basie and Dizzy Gillespie. The music of Bill Henderson opens up a world of warmth, blues feeling and deeply expressive storytelling. Two years after his death at the age of 90, the Benedict Stephens Quartet brings that music to life – providing an opportunity to explore the richness of swing that made Henderson such a distinctive voice in jazz. Drawing on his celebrated repertoire from the Great American Songbook, the Quartet aims to capture the spirit of Henderson’s classic recordings, while bringing its own musical personalities to the music through improvisation. The programme includes classics such as “A Lot of Livin’ To Do” and “Señor Blues”. John Johnson – vocals Tom Barber – piano Benedict Stephens – double bass Phil Thompson – drums
