Called “an old spirit in a young man’s body,” Jazz saxophonist, educator, composer and arranger Tim Mayerhas dedicated his life’s work to mastering the language of Jazz as a saxophonist. This becomes evident upon hearing him, and is why he is in demand in a variety of musical settings.

Tim’sexposure to music began at age 4, when he learned to work his parents’ record player. His favourite records were by Wes Montgomery, Ahmad Jamal, Bill Evans, and Martin Denny. He started playing saxophone when he was ten, and began learning jazz at Florida State University’s Summer Music Camp in 1980, where he found himself studying with many young and talented musicians including Marcus Roberts. In December of 1990, Tim began what was to be a three-year stint working aboard the cruise ships. This provided him with the opportunity to study a variety of styles and play in big bands that accompanied entertainers Al Martino, Vic Damone, Diahann Carrol, Bobby Rydell, Connie Stevens, Jack Jones, and many others.

The new album ‘Island Time’, demonstrates some of Tim’sbest work to date, showcasing his ability as a virtuoso saxophonist as well as his ear for writing complex, intricate and infectious smooth, funk tinted jazz.

Further studies at Berklee College of Musicunder the guidance of luminaries like Andy McGhee, George Garzone, and Bill Pierce solidified Mayer’s position as a jazz force to be reckoned with. He embarked on a journey that saw him perform and collaborate with the RG Jazz Orchestra in Spain’s Canary Islands and participate in Xalapa, Mexico’s prestigious Seminar and Jazz Festival.

Tim Mayer’sreputation as a consummate performer was cemented through collaborations with luminaries like John Faddis, Bob Mintzer, Slide Hampton, and Arturo Sandoval. His contributions to groundbreaking ensembles like Waitiki earned him consecutive Hawaii Music Awards and a Grammy nomination for La Clave Secreta’s electrifying Latin/Caribbean album, and a Grammywin in 2023, for his participation in Natalia Lafourcade’s Un Canto Por México.

In 2011, Tim Mayer stepped into the spotlight as a leader with the release of his debut album, ‘Resilience’, earning acclaim for his exploration of post-bop nuances. He continued to shine on prestigious stages, sharing his talent with large ensemble settings and collaborations with acts like Don Tiki and reaching number 3 on Apple Music with his single ‘For Miles’. Having had acclaim across the likes of Stereogum, JazzTimes, All About Jazzand many others, Tim Mayer has more than established himself.

With a career spanning decades and a musical journey that includes international acclaim and relentless exploration, Tim Mayer’s ‘Island Time’ promises to be a testament to his artistic evolution.
