“Ensconced” is an exciting new collaboration between Milan-born British/Turkish vocalist and lyricist Brigitte Beraha and leading UK guitarist/composer Ant Law.

Inspired by Ant’s compositions, Brigitte exhibits rich lyrical storytelling, from wistful memories of growing up in the south of France in ‘Who We Are’ to the more obscure tale of a gifted horse in ‘Clever Hans’. Her deeply expressive vocals, alongside Ant’s inventive and melodic acoustic guitar artistry, are the elements at the very heart of this music.

Ant Law: “It’s incredibly rare for me to play the acoustic steel-strung guitar, but that instrument is at the centre, alongside Brigitte’s voice. It’s also unusual for me to collaborate with vocalists/lyricists and I am amazed at the depth and colour Brigitte’s poetry brings to this music.”

Together Brigitte and Ant explore the contrast between the sparseness of acoustic guitar & voice duo and richer electronic textures/larger instrumentations. Alongside their original songs are two well known jazz standards, one of which opens the album – A Kiss To Build A Dream On (made famous by Louis Armstrong).

The album also closes with a standard – Bernstein’s Some Other Time. Between these are warm, intimate original compositions with a focus on the sound of Brigitte’s voice, and poetic lyrics accompanied by acoustic guitar. The latter half of the album becomes more expansive, including a reimagining of Ant’s composition Harvest with guest appearances from with Greek bassist Petros Klampanis and Cuban drummer Ernesto Simpson. Matt Calvert’s electronic wizardry features on Above Water and Who We Are, the latter of which also features a beautiful piano contribution by Kit Downes.
