“When I was composing this song at the piano, I immediately had an image of ocean waves in motion with sunlight reflecting on them like a mirror” says Ciel, It’s an image that influenced the entire song, from the piano melody that ascends and descends like waves, to the lexical field of the lyrics and Ambre’s sublimely aqueous vocals, sung in her native French, mirrored in perfect harmony.

The video was directed by photographer and visual artist Alex Dozois, whose work explores the relationships between humans and the natural world. “The vastness I felt listening to eau miroir really spoke to me,” she says. “It felt instinctively aligned with the intentions that shape my practice.” The video imagines Ambre’s inner world—where nature, water, and cycles are central themes—as a kind of visual meditation. Inspired by the song’s water motif, it was also important to Alex that the imagery unfold in a fluid, abstract way. “It’s not about telling a story,” Alex adds, “but evoking a mood, a memory, that quiet moment before a leap.”

“I’ve followed Alex’s work for years” says Ambre,” We’ve collaborated before, and I deeply value her talent, sensitivity, and humility. Her filming approach is as slow as the world can be fast, she’s always noticing subtle elements in nature, light and beauty around her. Since eau miroir was inspired by sunlight on water, she was the only person I could imagine directing this video. The collaboration felt completely natural.”

Released on 2 May, eau miroir is a dreamy slice of neo-classical pop and another perfectly crafted song. The album’s title emerged as Ambre noticed water recurring throughout – “fragile yet constantly moving, sometimes swelling into something vast” she says. “I wanted the music to flow between song and instrumental with that same fluidity.” She adds, “It also reflects solitude and silence—music as a doorway to a dreamlike, grounding underworld.”

still, there is the sea is a beautifully refined album that weaves string arrangements and other acoustic textures around Ambre’s ethereal voice. At once spacious, self-contained, fragile yet open and honest, her sound draws inspiration from contemporary classical and art-pop artists such as Agnes Obel, Patrick Watson, Sufjan Stevens, and Thom Yorke. Songs offer an escape from what’s going on in the world – the horrors of war and climate change – an attempt to create beauty, offer escapism and engage with the world in way that is meaningful.

eau miroir was co-produced with Pietro Amato (Patrick Watson, Arcade Fire) with orchestral arrangements assisted by Owen Pallett (Arcade Fire), who assisted throughout the album.
