Born in Birmingham UK, Julian moved to London where he quickly gained recognition as a creative and original musician. At 20 he joined the much acclaimed band Loose Tubes. Over the past 30 years, he has toured and recorded throughout the world with leading International musicians such as Hermeto Pascoal, Dave Holland, John Taylor, Carla Bley, Django Bates, John Scofield, Kenny Wheeler, John Abercrombie, Mario Laginha, Bill Frisell, and many more.
Julian has to date released 15 CDs as a leader that have won many awards and accolades. He has become hugely influential to a new generation of British and European musicians. His latest CDs are on the Editionrecords.com label with his UK Quartet (“Tonadas”) and LAN Trio, with long standing friends Portuguese pianist Marhio Laginha and Norwegian percussionist Helge Norbakken (“Setembro”).
As a composer / arranger, Julian’s has worked with; Aarhus Jazz Orchestra, Phronesis and the HR (Frankfurt Radio Big Band) CD “The Behemoth” CD (Edition Records), NDR (North German Radio Big Band), Apollo Saxophone Quartet, with his octet (by Birmingham Jazz and BBC Radio 3), the National, Walsall and Berkshire Youth Jazz Orchestras, The Fenland Youth Symphony Orchestra and Royal Academy Of Music. In 1999 Julian was the recipient of the Jazz Composers Alliance Composition Award from the USA and in 2011-12 Julian was composer in Residence at the Luzern Jazz School, Switzerland.

AS AN EDUCATOR Julian is respected and in demand. He is currently professor of Jazz Saxophone at the KUG Institute of Jazz in Graz, Austria. Julian recieved an Honorary Fellowship from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire for “Services to Music” in June 2017.
