ConnectsMusic is so happy to feature “I Get A Kick Out Of You” – the latest single by trumpeter Jay Phelps and the second release from his upcoming album ‘Broken Standards Vol 2’. We’re loving this vibing, bubbling, tune heard in a new light, pulsating with Max Milner’s floating featured guest vocals over Cengiz’s (CoOP presents/Selectors Assemble) broken beat production. Check it out!
LISTEN TO THE SINGLE HERE:
This energetic summer groove opens up with a trumpet intro by the leader, while fellow musicians – pianist Charlie Stacey (Yussef Days), percussionist Chiminyo, elevate the song with their talents.
First sung in the 1934 Broadway musical ‘Anything Goes’, ‘I Get a Kick Out of You’ is a Cole Porter classic arranged here with a Broken Beat twist by Phelps, with beat production by Cengiz (CoOP presents/Selectors Assemble) and silky smooth vocals by Max Milner giving it a quintessentially London sound.
‘Broken Standards Vol 2’ is the second instalment of his series where he gives Jazz standards a 21st century make over while simultaneously shinning a light on the global breakdown of social and economic standards.
Also a DJ, Phelps has taken his favourite genres to spin such as Afrobeat, Amapiano, Baile Funk, Broken beat, Neo Soul, Trip-hop and worked them into this project, a feast for the ears!
READ ‘I GET A KICK OUT OF YOU’ LYRICS BELOW:
My story is much too sad to be told
But practically everything leaves me totally cold
The only exception I know is the case
When I’m out on a quiet spree
Fighting vainly the old ennui
And I suddenly turn and see your fabulous face
I get no kick from champagne
Mere alcohol doesn’t thrill me at all
So tell me why should it be true
That I get a kick out of you?
Some get a kick from cocaine
I’m sure that if I took even one sniff
That would bore me terrifically too
Yet I get a kick out of you
I get a kick everytime I see
You standing there before me
I get a kick though it’s clear to me
You obviously don’t adore me
I get no kick in a plane
Flying too high with some guy in the sky
Is my idea of nothing to do
Yet I get a kick out of you
