Last year, pianist and composer Neil Cowley announced the “un-pressing of the pause” ending his trio’s 7-year hiatus with a magnificent and widely acclaimed new recording, Entity and a headline show at the 2024 EFG London Jazz Festival that would become one of its fastest selling shows of the year. Shortly afterwards, he announced The Entity Tour 2025 – their first full UK tour in over 8 years.

Just as a string of new Festival dates have been added – Aberdeen, Cheltenham, Love Supreme and Glasgow – the Neil Cowley Trio announce the release of Separate Entities EP, a mesmerising collection of three contrasting tracks, which will be released on April 4th on Hide Inside Records.

True to its name, ‘Separate Entities’ features three tracks recorded in three separate sessions, each with a distinct sound while retaining the unmistakable Neil Cowley Trio DNA. Opening the EP is Hornet, leading with a driving riff which cascades into a 3-way drama which, says Cowley “constantly trips over itself until it lands on its melodic feet in the choruses”.

Minute is a pompous, tongue in cheek tune “that gives the impression”, Cowley suggests “of being played in a wood panelled chamber purely for the entertainment of a select few”.

Finally, For The Want Of… showcases Cowley at his most elegiac. A stunningly beautiful piece he refers to as “my little cut glass moment of attempted beauty”. Towards the end of the track, French horns provide depth and warmth enhancing its emotional weight, intensifying the melancholy that flows through the piece.

Joining Cowley on each of the Separate Entities tracks are his close musical allies, bassist Rex Horan and drummer Evan Jenkins.

The Entity Tour sees the trio together on the road once more – ‘brothers’ returning to the joy of human connection, a theme that defines Entity. The tour will see the trio performing a mix of new material alongside Cowley Classics. Expect killer melodies, majestic rolling grooves, thrilling crescendos and delicate passages – heart-wrenching and heart-pounding in equal measure.
