The Black Prince is a large space encompassing a front bar + music venue room + beer garden, situated on Abington Square in historic Northampton town centre. A public house has stood in this spot since 1897!
The Black Prince has been the name since 2016, but this space was formerly known as The Racehorse. Bands have been playing here since the 1960s. Over the years all sorts of touring bands have played here. In the 1990s you could see Feeder, Reef, Half Man Half Biscuit, and The Senseless Things. In the ’00s Hell Is For Heroes and Enter Shikari stopped by. In the ’10s it was home for the night to You Me At Six, InMe, ArnoCorps, Rozi Plain, Jeffrey Lewis, and Look Mum No Computer.
In this new decade we continue this tradition of showcasing legends and future stars. Recent performers include The Sherlocks, Working Men’s Club, The Lovely Eggs, Andy Bell, The Lottery Winners, Red Rum Club, Beans On Toast, Joe Talbot [IDLES], Scalping, The Bug Club, and Son Of Dave.
In amongst all this visiting royalty 15 Abington Square has played a crucial role in developing homegrown talent, and locals such as slowthai, The Jazz Butcher, Alan Moore’s Emperors Of Ice Cream, Dark, Billy Lockett, and pre-Bauhaus outfits containing Daniel Ash, Kevin Haskins, and David J, have all graced the stage.
