Girl Plays Jazz Project (established in December 2017) is dedicated to the support and promotion of girls and young women as jazz improvisers. We are a not-for-profit community interest company.
Our Project has three strands. We run an introduction to jazz improvisation workshop programme – introducing girls and young women to a wide range of jazz, funk, blues and world music improvisation, and developing them as jazz musicians with the support of a six-piece professional jazz band. We organise jazz masterclasses where top level professionals from the London jazz scene come in to teach the girls. We also arrange performance and development opportunities for the girls in well-known London venues, recently including the Vortex, Ronnie Scott’s, Karamel, Poplar Union and the EFG London Jazz Festival.
We run monthly online Big Jazz Theory classes where the girls dig a little deeper into jazz theory and history.
In March 2021 we were delighted to receive a National Lottery Project Grant from the Arts Council to run our 2021 to 2023 programme – including expanding our provision outside of London.
We have several great musicians lined up for our masterclasses including Kate Williams, Sara McGuinness, Issie Barratt, Gareth Lockrane, Shirley Smart and many more…
