Im Sommer 1995 fanden sich JazzmusikerInnen und Jazzmusikfreunde verschiedenster Richtungen zusammen und gründeten gemeinsam die “Jazz Offensive Essen e.V.” (JOE). Inzwischen zählt JOE knapp über 100 Mitglieder.

Die Jazz Offensive Essen ist heute als Mitgestalterin der Kulturlandschaft in unserer Stadt fest verankert. Zu den regelmäßigen Sessions in der Filmbar der Lichtburg, den Workshops im Grend mit renommierten Musikern und der Reihe “free essen” (Goethebunker) kamen nach und nach weitere Veranstaltungen hinzu. Das unbestrittene Highlight in jedem Jahr ist natürlich das JOE-Festival im Januar.

Jenseits der Essener Grenzen bringt sich JOE zunehmend in überregionale Projekte ein. Dazu zählen die Kooperationen mit jazzwerkruhr, jazzplayseurope, den Jazz-Initiativen in Köln, Moers, Dortmund, Bielefeld und Oberhausen sowie mit dem Kultusministerium NRW und dem Deutschen Tonkünstlerverband.

“Bei der langfristig angelegten Arbeit an der Perspektive Jazzregion Ruhrgebiet wird man auf das Potenzial der JOE nicht verzichten können”, konstatierte der damalige Kulturdezernent der Stadt Essen Dr. Oliver Scheytt.

JOE verfügt mittlerweile über eine gute Infrastruktur; ein eigenes Büro garantiert die kontinuierliche Arbeit. Auch die enge Kooperation mit dem Kulturbüro der Stadt sowie die Konstanz der Vorstandsarbeit haben sich als fruchtbar erwiesen.

The Jazz Offensive Essen is today firmly anchored in our city as a co-creator of the cultural landscape. The regular sessions in the film bar of the Lichtburg, the workshops in Grend with renowned musicians and the series “free essen” (Goethebunker) gradually added more events. The undisputed highlight every year is of course the JOE-Festival in January.

Beyond the borders of Essen, JOE is increasingly involved in supraregional projects. These include cooperations with jazzwerkruhr, jazzplayseurope, the jazz initiatives in Cologne, Moers, Dortmund, Bielefeld and Oberhausen, as well as with the Ministry of Culture NRW and the Deutscher Tonkünstlerverband.

“In the long-term work on the perspective of the jazz region Ruhrgebiet you will not be able to do without the potential of the JOE,” stated the then head of the culture department of the city of Essen. Oliver Scheytt.

JOE now has a good infrastructure; own office guarantees the continuous work. The close cooperation with the cultural office of the city as well as the constancy of the work of the executive board have proved fruitful.
