SOCIAL MEDIA:
TIPS FOR PROFESSIONALS AND EARLY CAREER ARTISTS

Social media…friend or foe? It all depends on how we balance our work and engagement time.

Nowadays, most of the musicians and music creators use social media to promote themselves and their work, however there are times when they can feel that their work gets unnoticed.

We’d love to help; here you can find simple steps that you could do to attract more attention for you and your work:

  • CREATE STRATEGY come up with a successful marketing strategy:
    • What audience are you targeting?
    • What content should you use that would appeal to them?
    • What is your vision?
    • Timeline for your success

Here are quick tips on how to build your social media strategy:

  • CHOOSING A PLATFORMas a music and content creator choosing the right platform will enable us and our work to gain recognition. Your personal Artist Connects Page can be your online-base like an EPK for all your music sales outlets, videos, biogs, and professional contacts. A place to share your ideas and you work with the world

  • LANGUAGE – using the right and honest language will strengthen the connection between us as artists and our dedicated audience. Use clear and genuine language to really get your message across. Your language is one of the ways to make a first impression – will grab and hold your audience’s attention

  • SOCIAL MEDIA CONTENT CREATIONIf you don’t want to spend hours stressing out about your social media content, try to create some content in advance. You can schedule your Facebook, Instagram & Twitter posts using simple tools such as Creator Studio or Facebook Business Suite (Facebook & Instagram) and Twitter Ads (ads.twitter.com) for Twitter. These tools will help you save time, improve performance, and get better insights.

Useful tools for creating engaging content:

    • Canva
    • Offeo
    • Photoshop
    • Splice (video editor)

  • KEEP YOUR BRAND IMAGEas an artist, our brand image is conveying our message and enriches our identity. We want people to know who we are and what our identity is. Then your audience will come back to hear/read more, because of your brand, and because they can relate to your work

  • PROFESSIONAL PHOTOSbeing able to give a face to a name is a strong means of developing awareness among audience and live bookers. We live in an increasingly visual world, strong / professional photos = stronger impact to your message / story

  • CONSISTENCY IS KEY – consistency on social media will open doors to success. It’s important to prepare relevant music content for your audience and be consistent with it. This will help your brand image to reach and engage with more people. When they know when to expect your content, they will come back

  • CONNECTING WITH AN AUDIENCE – as artists, interaction with our online audience is key, responding to their lovely comments, or Instagram, Facebook stories. This way, they will feel more like who they are, our supporters, and less like just a consumer

  • BE ORIGINAL – as music creators let’s have authenticity at our core. This way, our audience will be able to connect with us and our work

  • WHO IS YOUR AUDIENCE – as an artist with both smaller and larger audiences, it’s important to get to know them well. Make the audience your community. Do they prefer videos or ‘live performances’ on social media? Do they enjoy long or short posts? Also, knowing a little bit about your audience eg: age/demographic could be a great factor for choosing what song to perform or what music to create

  • DON’T COPY BUT GET INSPIRATION – other musicians aren’t your competitors – have them as your allies. It’s individuals in the same industry as you; rather than competing, you may always get inspiration and progress forward together. Do they have the same goals and ideas? Is there something you could learn from them?

  • INTEGRITY midst all the advice of thinking about your audience, your look, your sound, being yourself must be key.. Especially regarding artistic output, being genuine and having conviction in what you create and who you are can be seen a mile away

Continuity in your social media impact

Many artists find it difficult to do regular posts on social media. Some of them don’t know what to post, others don’t have much time to do so. Here are some post ideas if you’re a musician:

  • BTS content – photos/videos taken behind the scene. Fans love seeing what’s going on behind the closed curtain. These natural, candid pictures are always the most interesting and fun to watch. Make sure you take some while gigging, writing or having a band rehearsal/meeting
  • Pictures & videos of you performing is a ‘must have’. Fans love watching footage from the live gigs
  • Pictures of your lyrics, music, instruments, anything related to your music
  • ‘WINS’ – Don’t forget about celebrating your success! Let fans know about your ‘milestones’, playlists you were put on, awards and anything you’re proud of. Your fanbase would love to celebrate it with you!
  • If you struggle with consistency, there are many tools that can help you schedule your posts in advance. Here are some of them worth exploring; Asana, Canva, Facebook creator
